Newpoint Bay Director's Message: September 8, 2009

Dear Parents,

Please read the following for important reminders and information:

School Advisory Council
Remember that our first School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting will be held tonight at 6:00 for any parents interested in serving on this important committee.

Open House

This Thursday, September 10, from 3 pm to 7 pm, Newpoint Bay will be hosting an Open House for any parents and students who may still be interested in attending Newpoint Bay this year.  We have a few openings that we would like to fill with students like yours who would be great assets to our school.  If you have a friend or relative who might be interested in attending Newpoint, please invite them to drop in on Thursday to find out more about our school.

The Open House for the parents of our existing students will be Monday, September 28th at 6:00 pm.

H1N1 Virus
Now that school is back in session, the Health Department is concerned about the potential for a rapid spread of the H1N1 virus (swine flu).  Please encourage your child to wash his or her hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water and to cough/sneeze into his or her elbow.  These measures will help keep all of us healthy and happy.  Also, if your child has a fever of 100 degrees or more, please keep him or her home until they have been without fever for 24 hours.  Please read the document found here for more details for parents on preventive measures related to the flu caused by the H1N1 virus.

APEX
Beginning on Sunday, September 13th, you should receive an automatic progress report from APEX in your email.  We are entering the email addresses we currently have on file for you.  If you do not receive the APEX progress report this Sunday, please let us know so that we can verify your email address.

When you receive the report, you will see that each of your child’s APEX courses are listed and for each course, the report indicates each of the following:

Due Date Status:  You will see either “green,” “yellow,” or “red” indicating whether your child is up to date with completing his or her assignments or is falling behind.

Grade to Date:  This grade will be the average of the grades for completed assignments.  This grade may be high if all work turned in is of high quality, even though the student may be missing assignments

Overall Grade:  This grade is the average of all assignments, including those that are “due” but have not been turned in.  Each assignment that that not been turned in is factored as a zero, so this grade could be significantly lower than the Grade to Date.

We will discuss this progress report and how to read it most effectively at the Open House on September 28th.

Study Hall
Our schedule for study hall begins on Monday, September 14th and will be available for students each Monday thereafter from 3:00 to 4:00.

In study hall, students have the opportunity to work on the computer (or other work) in a quiet and monitored environment.  This study hall opportunity is particularly beneficial for students who may not have ready access to a computer off campus.  The study hall periods are monitored by a different teacher each week who is available to help students as needed.  However, if your student needs additional help from a specific teacher in a specific subject, we encourage the student to make an appointment to meet with the teacher individually one day after school and not depend on the study hall session as his or her only means of assistance.

In addition to study hall, after-school detention will also begin on Monday, September 14th and continue each Monday thereafter from 3:00 to 4:00.  If your student has been assigned detention, he or she will need to attend their scheduled session or they will be assigned additional sessions and ultimately suspension.  Students assigned to detention are given a Detention Form that must be signed by a parent.

If your child attends study hall or detention, please be sure they are picked up promptly at 4:00.

If you have any questions about any of the information contained here, please do not hesitate to contact us.
